The firm that owns the National Enquirer has agreed to pay $187,500 to the Federal Election Commission to settle complaints that it unlawfully aided Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016 by suppressing the story of an actress who said she had a sexual relationship with Trump.
The FEC concluded that American Media Inc., now known as A360 Media LLC, made an illegal corporate contribution to Trump’s campaign by paying Karen McDougal $150,000 to give up the rights to her story about Trump.
AMI and its former chief, David Pecker, initially argued through attorneys that they acted as journalists in making the deal with McDougal. However, in 2018 the firm and Pecker entered into a non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors in New York, stipulating that the arrangement was intended to influence the 2016 presidential election.

Per the above article: American Media and the National Enquirer tabloid newspaper shredded sensitive documents about Donald Trump shortly before the 2016 election, the reporter Ronan Farrow alleges in a book published on Tuesday.
In Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators, Farrow writes that the shredding happened in the first week of November 2016, on the day the Wall Street Journal reported a Playboy model’s claim to have had an affair with Trump and American Media’s role in keeping the story quiet. That process is referred to in the title of Farrow’s book.
According to Farrow, Dylan Howard, then editor of the Enquirer, ordered a staffer to “get everything out of the safe” and said “we need to get a shredder down there”.
Farrow writes: “The staffer opened the safe, removed a set of documents, and tried to wrest it shut. Later, reporters would discuss the safe like it was the warehouse where they stored the Ark of the Covenant in Indiana Jones, but it was small and cheap and old.”
Farrow quotes an employee of the Enquirer as saying “a larger than customary volume of refuse” was collected from the Enquirer offices later the same day.
He also quotes a “senior AMI employee” as saying: “We are always at the edge of what’s legally permissible. It’s very exciting.”
On CNN on Monday morning, Farrow said the safe contained details of alleged consensual affairs and payoffs and also allegations of assault by Jill Harth, who in a 1997 complaint accused Trump of “attempted ‘rape’”. In October 2016, amid a flood of allegations of sexual misconduct by Trump, she stood by that allegation in an interview with the Guardian.
The Enquirer endorsed Trump and published negative stories about his opponent, Hillary Clinton.
Farrow’s claims were reported before the book’s publication by outlets including Politico, CNN and the Daily Beast.

Cruz fired back Tuesday at the Oswald “scoop,” which the New York City-based supermarket tabloid published as its cover story, accusing Trump of using the notorious tabloid as his personal “hit piece to smear anybody and everybody” in the 2016 race. He noted that the paper, which is run by Trump’s friend David Pecker, has also attacked his family: in late March, an off-the-wall Enquirer story made unsubstantiated claims that Cruz had extramarital affairs with five women, including a former staffer.
It’s widely known that Pecker, the Enquirer CEO, is a personal friend of Trump’s, a relationship an anonymous Enquirer source told New York magazine is “very close.” The tabloid endorsed Trump’s campaign for President in March, which appeared to be the first time it had ever endorsed a presidential candidate.
Sources echoed those sentiments to the New York Daily News, with one unnamed person saying because “Trump is a big friend of Pecker” there wouldn’t be any “John Edwards-type investigations,” referring to the Enquirer’s breaking news of the former Democratic presidential candidate’s affair, which effectively ended Edwards’ political career.
